” Adults aren’t the only ones who can be hit by Type 2 Diabetes….”
The number of people worldwide suffering with Type 2 Diabetes, once considered a disease that only affects adults, has been increasing at an “alarming rate” among children and adolescents.
Brunei is no exception. According to the 1st National Nutritional Status Survey, which was conducted in 1997, the Sultanate has the highest obesity prevalence in the Western Pacific region.
This warning was made by Minister of Health Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Suyoi bin Hj Osman during the launching of “World Diabetes Day 2008″ at the new Health Promotion Centre in Berakas yesterday.
“Twenty years ago, we did not hear of children with Type 2 Diabetes , only Type 1 Diabetes,” said the minister, attributing the rapid increase in number of children suffering from Type 2 Diabetes to dietary changes.
